60% of stubble burning cases in Punjab...


Between september 15 and october 22, there were 3,700 incidents of stubble burning in punjab, in which 60 percent of the cases are from three districts of the Majha region - Tarn Taran, amritsar and Gurdaspur. According to the data received from punjab Remote Sensing Center in Ludhiana, 1,034 cases of stubble burning were reported from Tarn Taran which is the highest in the state. After this, 895 cases of stubble burning were reported from amritsar and 324 from Gurdaspur. During this, a total of 3,696 cases of stubble burning have been reported in the state.

An official of the state agriculture department said that in punjab, 35 per cent of the total cultivated area is under paddy and harvesting will start in a day or two. Harvesting was delayed by at least 10 days in september due to unseasonal rains. punjab has about 30.84 lakh hectares of paddy area during this Kharif season.

Incidents of stubble burning in the field have increased as the state has witnessed a four-fold increase in such cases since october 10. Till october 10, there were 718 incidents of stubble burning in the state. However, the present situation is slightly better this year as compared to the incidents of stubble burning in the last two years.

There were 10,785 and 5,438 incidents of stubble burning in punjab in 2020 and 2021 till october 22, respectively. On 22 october, punjab witnessed 582 active incidents of stubble burning. However, according to the data, there were 1,341 and 1,111 such incidents in the state on this day in 2020 and 2021.

Despite the state government assuring more crop residue management machines and launching a massive awareness program against stubble burning, incidents of stubble burning in the fields are taking place. Since the time for wheat cultivation is very short after the paddy harvest, farmers set their fields on fire to remove the crop residues quickly.
