In IIT, there have been persistent allegations of caste discrimination, particularly concerning instances of students taking their own lives due to such discrimination. An additional concern raised is the treatment of non-vegetarian students. A similar controversy has recently emerged at IIT Bombay.

The issue came to the forefront when some students ate non-vegetarian food at a table reserved for vegetarian students in the hostel canteen on the college campus. The student body accused the IIT management of imposing a fine of Rs 10,000 on protesting students who claimed that those who consumed non-vegetarian food were facing exclusion.

Regarding these allegations, a committee operating within IIT bombay, posted on a website, "The IIT bombay administration has levied a fine of 10,000 rupees on students who peacefully protested against the college's food segregation policy. This action by the administration is akin to perpetuating caste-based discrimination in modern times."

When approached for comment, the IIT bombay administration did not provide a formal response. However, the IIT bombay canteen issued an official statement following the incident involving fines for non-vegetarian food consumption. The statement emphasized the reservation of six tables for vegetarians in the common canteen across three hostels and the importance of compliance. It stated that disciplinary action would be taken against any canteen found in violation of these rules, and penalties would be enforced.

Such violations are considered grounds for disciplinary action as they disrupt the desired harmony within the cafeteria. Notably, a recent incident of a student named Darshan Solanki's suicide at IIT bombay has garnered significant attention, with student groups alleging that discrimination against scheduled caste students played a role in motivating the student to take his own life.
