After this week's fan screenings, we finally have a comprehensive analysis of the MCU's portrayal of the Sentry, who has been Thunderbolts*'s greatest mystery. The Sentry was, predictably, created by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. "Bob" turns out to be the sole survivor of the O.X.E. experiments conducted on humans by the CIA director in an attempt to create a potent new superhuman.

He first meets the Thunderbolts in the trailers' deserted base, and then he meets Val in the old Avengers Tower (now The Watchtower). She tries to convince him by saying all the right things, but when she touches him and sees a horrible vision from her past, just like with the Thunderbolts earlier in the film, she gets a taste of the darkness inside.  Nevertheless, Val persists and has Bob dress up as The Sentry, a superhero she created from the ground up.

Val sends her new ally to deal with the Thunderbolts when they confront her—until he begins to doubt her.  Val tries to press his kill switch after realizing he cannot be controlled, which triggers The Void.  The villain starts destroying New York right away.

When Yelena steps into the physical form of The Void, she discovers that Bob has had a horrible life.  She relates to him since they have had similar trauma, but we find out that he used meth in the past, therefore his worst memory is of a man dressed as a chicken (yes, the MCU mentions drugs).  The Sentry eventually triumphs over his inner evil as Yelena, Bob, and the rest of the team battle back against The Void.

The Void hasn't been completely defeated, though, and in a scene after the credits have rolled, Bob says he can't change into The Sentry and employ those abilities once again without running the risk of The Void being released as well.  That, of course, adds interest to his role in Avengers: Doomsday and has given us one of the most nuanced new characters in the MCU.
