Australia has now topped the list of countries they are choosing to study in. According to a survey conducted by international education services firm IDP education in march 2025, australia has overtaken the US to claim the top spot. At the same time, Canada's popularity has declined further. 28% of indian students who participated in the survey chose australia as their top choice. The US (22%) and the united kingdom (UK) (21%) are in the second place. canada has dropped six percentage points compared to march last year (2024) to stand at just 13%. The 'Emerging Futures Seven - Voice of the international Student' report surveyed over 6,000 students worldwide, of whom around 1,400 were Indians. The report cited the improved global rankings of its universities (15 Australian universities are in the top 200 in the QS World university Rankings 2025), Australia-India economic cooperation, and the extension of the post-study work permit period under the trade agreement (AI-ECTA) as the main reasons for Australia's rise in popularity.
22% consider it their first choice. The quality of education there, job opportunities, and post-study work visa policies are still valued by students. Although australia and the US are at the top, financial factors significantly influence indian students’ decisions. Cost is the biggest concern for two-thirds (66%) of those surveyed, followed by visa issues (47%). Financial factors such as tuition fees and savings requirements are becoming increasingly important. More than half of indian students said they would change their study destination if scholarships were available (55%), or if part-time work opportunities were available (54%). Other significant challenges include housing costs (43%) and managing their studies alongside part-time jobs (39%). However, the main motivation for indian students to study abroad is their career development. According to the survey, 77% choose international education to increase their employment opportunities and earning potential.
