With an estimated $35 million to $40 million three-day launch, Lionsgate's From the World of john Wick: Ballerina began tracking Thursday. A year beyond its original release date, the Len Wiseman-directed film, which also had extra photography by filmmaker and john Wick architect chad Stahelski, eventually opens in theaters on june 6.

Right now, Keanu Reeves' R-rated action film, which stars Ana de Armas and features a cameo from john Wick himself, is a favorable choice for men over 25. It also has good unaided awareness of the over-25 demographic.

John Wick: 48% of men over 25 (compared to 45% in part 3) and 22% of women over 25 as well as 22% of men under 25 were drawn to Chapter 4 (93% on PostTrak and 82% certain recommend).  When the 2023 release of john Wick drew in 22% Latino and Hispanic, 21% Asian American, and a very respectable 19% Black audience, diversity demos were huge.  At $73.8 million, the fourth installment of the Thunder Road franchise set a new opening record.

Ballerina's opening is higher than the second-best start for the shoot-'em-up franchise, john Wick: Chapter 2's $30.2M.  Spinoffs, such as Lionsgate's The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes ($44.6M) and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore ($42.1M), thrive at $35M to $40M.  It's still early in the campaign, as we usually say, and oscar candidate de Armas has been killing it on social media ever since Lionsgate released some amazing video at CinemaCon in April, including BTS footage.

Reeves had time in his schedule to promote the movie, which is why Ballerina is stuck here in a very competitive June.  We've heard that reshoots for Ballerina cost between $80 million and $90 million.  To finance its films, Lionsgate always sells off overseas properties while keeping the rights in the US and the UK.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is the highest-earning film in the series, generating over $440 million and receiving a 94% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, contributing to the $1.03 billion global box office total for the john Wick franchise.
