US President donald trump on monday raised the possibility of regime change in iran and also reiterated that US attacks have "completely destroyed" Iran's nuclear enrichment sites. He described this claim as accurate and said that this word is completely appropriate, even though US agencies are still assessing the damage.
Trump said in a social media post that the sites targeted by GBU-57 bunker buster bombs and Tomahawk cruise missiles on saturday night suffered "unprecedented damage". He wrote, "The biggest damage was done very deep under the ground. Bullseye!!!"
Attack on Iranian regime or just nuclear program?
Trump also said that if Iran's leaders are not able to make "Iran great again", then regime change is possible. This statement is much more aggressive than the public comments of his top officials. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the mission was not about regime change but rather a precision operation targeting Iran's nuclear program. Vice President JD Vance also said that "we are not at war with iran, we are fighting their nuclear program. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, we do not want war in Iran.
Iran's response - "Washington is behind Israel"
Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian said that the US attacks show that Washington is behind the ongoing Israeli campaign against the Islamic Republic. He vowed to respond to this. Meanwhile, US defense officials are still assessing how much damage was caused by 'Operation Midnight Hammer'. General Dan Kane, head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that it is not clear whether Iran's nuclear capabilities were completely destroyed or not. He refrained from using the same language as Trump. UN nuclear inspector chief Rafael Grossi said, "At this time no one, not even the international Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is in a position to evaluate the damage done underground in Fordo."
