The arid expanse of Gujarat’s Rann of kutch has emerged as the epicentre of India’s renewable energy revolution, attracting multi-billion-dollar investments from business giants Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani. With its vast barren land, high solar radiation, and strong wind potential, kutch promises to become a global hub for green power.

1. Adani’s Khavda Mega Park – World’s Largest Green Energy Project

  • Project Size: 538 sq km – about five times the size of Paris.
  • Capacity: Target of 30 GW by 2029, with potential expansion to 50 GW.
  • Status: 5.6 GW capacity already operational; first electricity supplied to the grid in february 2024.
  • Technology: Hybrid – combining solar and wind energy for grid stability.
  • Implementation: Led by adani Green Energy Ltd.

2. Reliance’s Ambitious Solar Project – Three Times the Size of Singapore

  • Project Site: 5,50,000 acres (2,225 sq km) of arid land in Kutch.
  • Potential Output: Estimated to generate over 110 GWh annually from 55 MW of solar module deployment per day at peak.
  • Battery Storage: 150 MWh battery containers to support large-scale storage.
  • Vision: To meet nearly 10% of India’s electricity demand within the next decade.
  • Announcement: Detailed by Anant Ambani during Reliance’s AGM on august 29, 2025.

3. Why Kutch? – The Ideal Renewable Energy Landscape

  • High Solar Radiation: 5.5–6.0 kWh/m²/day and over 300 sunny days annually.
  • Wind Potential: Average wind speeds of 8 m/s – perfect for hybrid (solar + wind) projects.
  • Vast Barren Land: Minimises displacement issues and lowers land acquisition costs.
  • Proximity to Ports: Mundra and Kandla facilitate easy equipment import.
  • Government Incentives: Streamlined land leasing policies and fast-track clearances.

4. Other Players – NTPC Joins the Race

  • State-owned NTPC Ltd has announced plans for 4.75 GW of solar capacity in Khavda.
  • This will further strengthen Kutch’s position as a renewable energy cluster.

5. Manufacturing & Green Hydrogen Push

  • Both Adani and Reliance plan to manufacture solar modules, batteries, and green hydrogen equipment.
  • Adani has already commissioned India’s first off-grid 5 MW green hydrogen pilot plant.

6. Alignment with India’s Renewable Goals

  • India aims to reach 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030.
  • Net-zero carbon emissions target: 2070.
  • Kutch projects could contribute significantly to achieving these milestones.
