The tamil Nadu government has announced that a Pongal cash assistance of ₹3,348.59 crore is being distributed to over 1.11 crore ration card-holding families through the state’s fair price shops. The scheme aims to provide financial support to eligible families in time for the pongal festival, reinforcing the government’s commitment to welfare and social security.
Officials stated that the distribution is taking place at 24,924 fair price shops across the state. Each eligible family will receive the assistance directly, ensuring that the benefit reaches the grassroots level efficiently.
This initiative covers rice ration cardholders and migrant tamil families from Sri Lanka residing in the state, highlighting the inclusive nature of the welfare program. The government has set January 10, 2026, 10:00 a.m. as the cutoff for ensuring all payments are credited to the eligible families.
The program is part of a broader set of welfare measures implemented by the state government to support families, especially during festive seasons, by easing financial burdens and promoting economic stability for vulnerable households. Officials emphasized that such timely interventions strengthen public trust and contribute to social equity.
