Tiruppur: Textile manufacturers from Tiruppur and coimbatore have announced a 50 percent reduction in textile production starting today, protesting the continuous increase in yarn prices. The decision was taken during a meeting of the Tiruppur and coimbatore Textile Manufacturers Association, held yesterday at Palladam.
Representatives of spinning mills, garment units, and power loom owners participated in the meeting and expressed serious concern over the sharp rise in raw material costs, particularly cotton yarn. They stated that the frequent price hikes have severely affected the profitability of small and medium-scale textile units.
Industry members pointed out that yarn prices have increased multiple times over the past few months, while orders from domestic and international buyers remain unstable. Rising production costs, coupled with increased electricity tariffs, labor expenses, and transportation costs, have placed immense financial pressure on manufacturers.
Association leaders said the 50 percent production cut is a warning measure, urging the central and state governments to intervene immediately and regulate yarn prices. If corrective steps are not taken soon, they warned that a complete shutdown of textile units may follow in the coming days.
The textile industry plays a vital role in the economy of Tiruppur and coimbatore, providing employment to lakhs of workers and contributing significantly to India’s export earnings. Manufacturers cautioned that prolonged disruptions could impact employment and delay export commitments.
The association has appealed to government authorities to hold discussions with spinning mill owners and industry stakeholders to arrive at a fair pricing mechanism and ensure the sustainability of the textile sector.
