When the name kerala is heard people's mind often connects it to the high literacy rate. kerala is one of the states with a leading density of population. Even though the density of population is very high, from a very early period the people of kerala have maintained a high literacy rate. Many decades back even before the formation of this state, the ruling kings were aware of the importance of education.

Even from the medieval era, the rulers implemented facilities for basic education. After the formation of the state in 1956, the governments established school in every nook and corner all over Kerala. Even in the villages, we can see a primary and middle school every 2km and a higher secondary school within  5km. Most of the above schools are either government school or aided schools. Comparing to other states where operates a number of private schools, kerala has very few of them. We can see healthy competition between government and private school here in maintaining the qualities and amenities.

The educational reforms of kerala have dated back to the beginning of the 19th century by the royals, promoting a matriarchal society enabling the women too stand alongside men in every aspect by receiving equal status in education and social life. The social reformers also hold a crucial role in establishing educational institutions from early times which enable kerala to keep its highest literacy rate.
