History of World Oceans Day

Oceans Day was first proposed on 8 june 1992 at the Global Forum in Rio de Janeiro. The first World Ocean Day was celebrated in the year 2009 with the theme 'Our Oceans, Our Responsibility'.

Significantly, water is spread over 71 percent of the earth. This is the reason why the earth is also called as blue planet. The United Nations says that the oceans are considered the lungs of the planet. It is an important part of the biosphere as well as a major source of food and medicine.

The purpose of celebrating this day is to inform and educate the public about the impact of human actions on the oceans, to develop a worldwide movement of citizens and to unite the world's population on a project for the sustainable management of the world's oceans.
