Breast cancer Is the Most Common cancer In india, 1.38 Million Cases Diagnosed Annually. Know Estimated Incidence By 2030

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in India. There were 2.3 million new cases of breast cancer in india in 2020.

Breast cancer

Breast cancer is a disease in which there is an uncontrolled growth of breast cells, and mostly occurs in ducts or lobules. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in India. Between 1965 and 1985, the incidence (occurrence of new cases) of breast cancer increased by 50 percent, according to a march 2022 study published in the World Journal of Clinical Oncology. In 2016, the estimated number of incident cases in india was 11,800. Of these, 98.1 percent were females.

The prevalent cases in 2016 were 5,26,000. From 1990 to 2016, the age-standardized incidence rate of breast cancer in females increased by 39.1 percent.  In 2018, there were 18.08 million new cancer cases worldwide of which the number of breast cancer cases was 2.08 million. The incidence rate was 11.6 percent, Dr meenu Walia, Vice Chairman, Medical Oncology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali, told ABP Live. “Breast cancer accounted for 6,26,679 of the 9.55 million cancer-related deaths in 2018, representing 6.6% of all cancer-related deaths.

In india, breast cancer has taken the lead as the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths, surpassing cervical and oral cavity cancers. In 2018, there were 1,62,468 new breast cancer cases in indian women, making up 27.7% of all new cancers among indian women and 11.1% of all cancer deaths.”

There were 2.3 million new cases of breast cancer in india in 2020, according to the study. These accounted for 11.7 percent of all new cancer cases.  In 2020, breast cancer accounted for 13.5 percent of all cancer cases in india, and 10.6 percent of all deaths, according to the Globocan data 2020. In india, among females, breast cancer accounted for 24.5 percent of all incident cancer cases in 2020, the study said.

More younger women from india india are suffering from breast cancer than younger women from the West. Over the years, the number of cases of breast cancer in Bhopal, Chennai, and delhi has increased, the study said.  The chances of surviving for five years after being diagnosed with breast cancer were 95 percent, 92 percent, 70 percent, and 21 percent for stage I, stage II, stage III, and stage IV patients, respectively.

Due to factors such as early onset of disease, late detection, delayed management, and inadequate treatment, the survival rate of breast cancer patients in india is poor compared to Western countries.  Early detection and rapid treatment are the most efficient interventions for breast cancer control, according to the World cancer Report 2020.

Breast cancer incidence in india, and projected incidence by 2030

Every year, 1.38 million cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in India. Of these, 4.5 lakh or 0.45 million people succumb to the disease. Every four minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, and every 15 minutes, a woman dies from breast cancer in India.

“In india, we have been diagnosing 1.38 million cases every year. Of these, about 4 lakh 50 thousand deaths are registered every year. Every four minutes, we are diagnosing a female suffering from breast cancer, and every thirteen minutes, a female is dying of breast cancer in india,” Dr. Sunny Jain, Sr Consultant & HOD, Oncology, Marengo Asia Hospitals, Faridabad, told ABP Live.

It is estimated that there will be over two million cases of breast cancer worldwide by 2030, the study said. Breast cancer incidence is expected to double by 2030, and the age-standardized death rate, which is currently 9.2 per 100,000 population, is projected to increase by about seven percent, implying that the age-standardized death rate from breast cancer in 2030 will be 9.88 per 100,000 population.

"The incidence of breast cancer by the year 2030 is expected to double, and the age-standardized death rate, which is currently 9.2 per 1 lakh population, is expected to rise by 7 percent and settle at 9.88 per 1 lakh population. This is probably because we are diagnosing cases at very advanced stages due to improved technology,” said Dr. Jain.  He emphasized that if a woman notices a small lump on her breast, she must not overlook it, but should get herself screened for breast cancer.

Breast cancer relapse rates

Several cancer-related deaths occur due to recurrences. Around eight to 10 percent of breast cancer cases experience locoregional recurrences after surgery, and 11 to 30 percent develop distant metastases, said Dr Walia. In advanced stages, the risk of recurrence is higher.
