Breast cancer incidence is expected to double by 2030, and the age-standardized death rate, which is currently 9.2 per 100,000 population, is projected to increase by about seven percent, implying that the age-standardized death rate from breast cancer in 2030 will be 9.88 per 100,000 population.

This is probably because we are diagnosing cases at very advanced stages due to improved technology,” said Dr. Jain. He emphasized that if a woman notices a small lump on her breast, she must not overlook it, but should get herself screened for breast cancer.

Several cancer-related deaths occur due to recurrences. Around eight to 10 percent of breast cancer cases experience locoregional recurrences after surgery, and 11 to 30 percent develop distant metastases, said Dr Walia. In advanced stages, the risk of recurrence is higher.
