There has been a huge increase in the death penalty in saudi arabia last year. Amnesty international has expressed concern in this regard on monday (July 7, 2025). Amnesty international workers said that there has been an increase in the death penalty in Saudi Arabia. It has expressed concern over the increasing death penalty in non-violent drug cases.
According to Amnesty, saudi arabia has sentenced 345 people to death in the last year. This figure is the highest recorded by the organization in the last three decades. In the first half of this year i.e. from january 2025 to june 2025, 180 people have been sentenced to death. In such a situation, it is now being speculated that this record may be broken once again.
Human rights organization expressed concern
According to human rights organization Reprieve, about two-thirds of the people who have been hanged so far this year were convicted in non-violent drug cases. Amnesty has also expressed concern about the death penalty in such cases.
Saudi Arabia has not yet clarified why it is using the death penalty in such large numbers and that too especially in non-violent drug cases. According to the news agency Associated Press, when Saudi officials were asked about these death sentences, they did not give any answer.
However, the increasing number of death sentences in saudi arabia is completely contrary to the statement given by Crown prince Mohammed bin salman in 2022, in which he said that Saudi now gives death penalty only in cases of murder.
What statement did the Crown prince of saudi arabia give?
In an interview to 'The Atlantic', Saudi Arabia's Crown prince Mohammed bin Salman had said, 'As far as the death penalty is concerned, we have abolished it except for one category (narcotics), which is clearly written in the Quran. So we cannot do anything about it, no matter what happens. Because this is a direct teaching of the Quran.'
