On 22.5.2018, police opened fire on demonstrators seeking the shutdown of the Sterlite factory in Thoothukudi. Thirteen of them were shot. In this scenario, the cbi police have opened an investigation. The madurai District court is hearing the matter. 27 of the 71 defendants named in the CBI's charge sheet have been summoned to court. Today, 25 of the 27 defendants appeared in person before Judge Jayakumari Jemiratna. Then there's the verdict of the trial. The judge postponed the hearing until 1 p.m.

Vanchinathan, the attorney for the defendants, stated, "According to a high court order, the cbi is investigating the shooting case. In this case, the cbi has filed a charge sheet against 71 persons. A murder case has been filed against those engaged in the incident, according to the High Court. The police did not make any arrests, and the indictment claims that they are not guilty."

He further added, "In connection with the murders of Sathankulam's father and son, police have detained and imprisoned him. In the event of the shooting, no action has been taken against the officers. The investigation by the cbi is biassed. As a result, we have asked the cbi to conduct a thorough investigation into the Tuticorin shooting case, and we intend to return to the High Court."
