Siavash Sobhani, a North virginia doctor who has lived in the united states since infancy, lost his citizenship at the age of 61. He told The Washington Post that after applying for a new passport in February, he received a letter from the US State Department claiming that because his father was a diplomat at the Iranian Embassy at the time of his birth, he should not have been awarded citizenship at the time of his birth.

According to the letter, children born in the united states to diplomatic immunity parents do not obtain American citizenship at birth. It said that Sobhani had diplomatic immunity from US jurisdiction at the time of his birth and hence did not obtain citizenship. However, for Sobhani, who has been a doctor for over 30 years, this is the first time he has faced this problem. Throughout his life, every time his passport was reissued, the US State Department certified he was an American citizen.

Siavash Sobhani had recently turned 62 and had begun to consider retirement. He and his wife had planned to travel across the world for a year in the hopes of finding a community where they could buy a property.
