Somnath (Gujarat)Prime minister Narendra Modi took part in the Shaurya Yatra — a ceremonial procession in somnath — as part of the Somnath Swabhiman Parv on Sunday, during his three‑day visit to Gujarat.

The Shaurya Yatra is a symbolic march held to honour the countless warriors who defended the historic Somnath Temple over centuries of invasions and destruction, representing courage, sacrifice and resilience.

Highlights of the event included:

  • PM Modi played the conch (shankh) during the procession, accepting greetings from the gathered crowds.
  • He walked alongside the ceremonial route in a decorated open vehicle, joined by Gujarat Chief minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief minister Harsh Sanghavi.
  • Around 108 horses from the gujarat police Mounted Unit marched in the yatra, symbolising valour and sacrifice.
  • Traditional performances, including the playing of the damru and conch by students and cultural groups, added to the festive atmosphere.

Ahead of the yatra, thousands gathered along the route to welcome the prime minister, with saints, seers and children participating in the celebrations.

The Somnath Swabhiman Parv — observed from January 8–11, 2026 — commemorates the 1,000‑year anniversary of the first recorded attack on the somnath temple in 1026 by Mahmud of Ghazni, highlighting the temple’s enduring spiritual and cultural significance.

Following the Shaurya yatra, PM Modi is expected to perform darshan and pooja at the somnath Temple, and address the public as part of the celebrations.
