Rafael Nadal, Iga Swiatek, chris Evert, and other top men's and women's tennis players bid tearful farewell to Roger Federer on friday after he announced his retirement from the sport following his loss in the doubles match at the Laver Cup in London's O2 Arena. In his final match, the 41-year-old swiss great, who has won 20 Grand Slam singles titles, paired up with his longtime friend and adversary Nadal and fell to the American team of Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 7-6(2), 11-9. Federer had previously declared that the Laver Cup would be his last ATP competition.


After losing in doubles to the American team, Nadal and Federer sat alongside each other, trying to control their emotions. Nadal and Federer first met in 2004 in the Miami ATP Masters 1000 competition, where Federer won 103 tour-level championships and spent 310 weeks at the top of the ATP Rankings. Over the years, they squared off against one another 24 finals and 39 more times. Iga Swaitek, the top-ranked woman in the world in singles tennis, said that she could put off her sleep and train for this momentous event.
