President draupadi murmu on thursday mentioned and praised India's dominance in chess after addressing the nation on the eve of the 79th Independence Day. Murmu said that the country is going through a phase of change in the field of sports. 18-year-old indian Grandmaster D Gukesh became the youngest player to become a world champion. Not only this, apart from him in chess, R Praggnanandhaa, arjun Erigesi, Vidit Gujarati, Koneru Humpy, divya Deshmukh, and R Vaishali have also impressed everyone with their performance in international tournaments.


Divya Deshmukh won the title by defeating Humpy in the Women's world cup last month and became the youngest player to win the Women's Chess World Cup. During her address, Murmu saidthe final match of the FIDE Women's world cup for the World Chess championship was played between a 19-year-old daughter of India and a 38-year-old indian woman. This achievement underlines the sustained, globally comparable excellence of our women from generation to generation.

The President said, Our youth, brimming with new confidence, are making their mark in sports. For example, India's youth now dominate chess more than ever before. We look forward to transformational changes that will establish india as a global sports superpower under the vision enshrined in the National sports Policy 2025. Our daughters are our pride. They are overcoming barriers in every field, including defence and security. sports are one of the important indicators of excellence, empowerment, and potential.


Murmu said, This underlines the sustained and globally comparable excellence of our women from generation to generation. The gender gap in employment is also reducing. With the Nari shakti Vandana Act, women's empowerment is no longer a slogan but a reality.

The National sports Policy calls for accountability of administrators and the establishment of processes to ensure ethical practices, fair play, and healthy competition in the sports sector. It also proposes the formation of national agencies and inter-ministerial committees to facilitate prompt action and effective resolution of issues and promote transparency and seamless functioning in the sports ecosystem.
