Postal Agent Program

There are 1.56 lakh post offices in India. Despite the advent of cell phones, WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram, etc., the demand for postal services has not diminished. Official documents, letters, government letters, etc. are still sent by post. 


You can become self-employed by joining this post office as an agent. The post office offers two types of opportunities. The first post office will be required for a location but the branch cannot be set up there. Opportunity to start a branch with an agent at that location. The 2nd is to sell postal items, including postage stamps, in rural and urban areas, from individuals to postal agents. An investment of at least Rs 5,000 is sufficient for this



What qualifies 

  • The Post office has laid down certain criteria and qualifications for becoming postal agents. 
  • Those wishing to become an agent must be 18 years of age or older. 
  • Must be an indian citizen. 
  • Must have passed at least 8th standard in an accredited school.
  • Even without this qualification, anyone in the family can join as an agent even if they work in the post office. 
  • Apart from individuals, small shopkeepers, bonshops, box stores and stationery shops in villages and urban areas can also join as agents.  
  • In addition, individuals and their respective organizations may open postal branches in special economic zones, new industries, colleges, polytechnics, universities, and even private colleges.


How much income is available

Individuals and companies that become postal agents can make good profits through commissions. 

1. A commission of Rs.3 will be charged for a transfer by registered post

2. If you book express mail, you will get a commission of Rs.5 for the transfer

3. If you make a money order, you will get a commission of Rs.3.50 for Rs.100 and a commission of Rs.5 over Rs.200. Do not buy a money order for less than Rs.100.

4. If you do 100 registered mails per month, you will get an additional 20% commission.

5. 5 percent commission can be earned by selling stationery items including postage stamps, covers, cards.

6. 40% commission on sale, including revenue stamp

7. 10% commission on booking a quick parcel up to Rs. 5 lakhs and 7% commission on booking a registered parcel

8. Speed parcel booking above Rs 5 lakh up to Rs 2.50 lakh will get 15% commission and booking registered postal book will get 10% commission.

. Speed parcel booking above Rs 25 lakh up to Rs 1 crore will get 20% commission and booking by registered post will get 13% commission.

10. From 1 crore to Rs. 5 crore you will get 25% commission for speed parcel and 16% commission for registered mail.

11. 30% commission for express parcel over Rs. 5 crore and 20% commission for registered post.




How to apply

1. A detailed report should be submitted on where we are going to start the post office.

2. Receive the application form at the post office, complete it and file the project report. Or you can download the application form from the india Post website

3. Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Post office and the Agent.

4. After submitting the application, the selection of the applicant is subject to the authority of the Regional Chairman. The decision will be taken within 14 days of filing the application.
