Cybercriminals are getting smarter — and one of the fastest-growing scams in india today involves fake SIM cards issued using stolen or forged identity documents. These SIMs are often used for financial fraud, illegal calls, or scams — putting innocent people at risk of police investigation. Here’s how you can stay one step ahead and protect yourself.

🔍 1. Check Number of SIMs Linked to Your Name

Use the TAFCOP portal (https://tafcop.dgtelecom.gov.in/) launched by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

· Enter your mobile number and verify with OTP.

· See how many SIM cards are registered under your name.

· Report numbers you don’t recognize for immediate action.

📲 2. review Your mobile Bills Regularly

If you notice extra charges or unknown numbers billed to your account, it might be a sign that a SIM is active in your name without your knowledge.

🏦 3. Monitor Your bank & UPI Transactions

Fraudulent SIM cards are often used to receive OTPs for financial scams. Keep an eye on suspicious SMS alerts, unauthorized UPI transactions, or new accounts opened in your name.

🚨 4. Report Unknown SIMs Immediately

If you find unauthorized SIM cards linked to your identity:

· Raise a complaint on the TAFCOP portal.

· Call your telecom operator’s customer care and request deactivation.

· File a police complaint or cybercrime report (https://cybercrime.gov.in).

🧾 5. Safeguard Your KYC Documents

Never share Aadhaar, PAN, or ID copies with unverified agents or shops. If you must, write “For SIM KYC only” along with the date on the document copy to prevent misuse.

🧠 6. Stay Alert Against Phishing Calls

Fraudsters may call pretending to be from your telecom provider, asking for OTPs or Aadhaar details. Never share OTPs or personal data over phone or WhatsApp.

✅ Bottom Line

Fake SIM fraud can put your finances and reputation at risk, but proactive checks and timely reporting can save you from major trouble. Make it a habit to check the TAFCOP portal every few months and keep your personal documents secure.
