This evening, the Central Jail premises in Kalapatti hosted the first event for inmates to engage in nature gardening activities (March 14). As a result, the inmates were paid Rs. 200 per day and were stated to be sleeping peacefully. At the Kalapattu Central Jail near Pondicherry, there are a total of 244 people under trial and convicts. Under the direction of Prisons Department Head Ravideep Singh Sagar, the jail administration is taking various initiatives to rehabilitate them.

In prisons, programmes such as vocational training for offenders through volunteer organisations and stress relief through yoga and dance training are being adopted. As a new venture, the inmates are currently participating in natural farming, establishing farms, and rearing sheep, cows, poultry, and rabbits. On two and a half acres of land in the central prison complex, they have begun subsistence farming. The inmates have ploughed the field, planted beds, and planted banana, turmeric, and pineapple crops.

Due to the nature of agriculture, sheep, cows and rabbit breeding activities have been started for the required fertilizers. The barn for sheep and cattle is also built with old waste materials from the prison compound.
