Eco-friendly initiatives in Bengaluru - Go green!!!

Every year, during the ganesh chaturthi celebrations, Bengaluru residents bring Lord Ganesha into their homes with great pride and joy. As these idols are submerged in water after the 10-day celebrations are over, there is a growing awareness of the effect they have on the environment today. Idols can contaminate water with their hazardous chemicals, especially if they are painted and made of POP (Plaster of Paris). As a result, Bengalureans are choosing eco-friendly idols made of natural clay and without paint. Such idols are either made at people's homes or in their communities, purchased in local markets or online.

Ganesha "seed bomb" kits come in a variety of brands, so you are able to utilise the immersion clay for growing a plant at home. Additionally, more and more people are choosing to perform the immersion, or "visarjan," at home using buckets. Rishita Sharma and meena Subramanian founded Green Utsav, which holds workshops for schools, businesses and flat complexes in Bengaluru close to the festival dates where participants learn how to create their own eco-friendly Ganeshas.

Over 240 Ganeshas were expected to be created by participants of all ages in the nearly 10 workshops that had been scheduled over the weekend. "We hire seasoned potters and craftsmen to instruct people on how to create their own Ganesha. We also raise awareness about holding a festival with no waste, according to Rishita.

These community engagement initiatives promote the use of reusable, recyclable, or up-cycled cloth and plastic decorations. When people go on visarjan to the lakes, they frequently discard all the natural flower decorations, which is something that can be easily avoided. They also deliberately avoid producing waste in the workshops. They also raise awareness among flat communities to BYOC, or bring your own container, so that disposables can be avoided when collecting 'prasadam' at community celebrations in the form of cups, boxes or bottles from home.
