On Friday, May 2, in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, a 16-year-old Dalit girl was assaulted and dragged by her hair for reportedly resisting molestation while riding in a bus. On social media, a video of the assault has gone viral. A few men can be seen continuously slapping the adolescent and dragging her by her hair in the images. Saleem, the bus driver and conductor, was also attacked when he attempted to step in and shield her.

On the bus to Lakhimpur Kheri, there was a girl.  She was being harassed by some boys.  Bus driver Saleem was described by Dainik bhaskar as saying, "When she told me, I tried to stop them, but they started arguing and hit me."

Saleem claimed that he was robbed of Rs 25,500 by the men.

A case was filed by the Padhua police station in response to Saleem's complaint.  The bus driver asserted, however, that the men were given advice by the authorities before being released.

The UP congress published the story on X and denounced the yogi adityanath government as soon as word emerged that the Padhua police had released the accused guys.

The Lakhimpur Kheri issued a statement shortly after, stating that the suspected males had been taken into custody and that a case had been filed.  "A case has been filed under the relevant laws.  The aforementioned defendant has been taken into custody and charged.  "More legal actions are in progress," the police posted.
