Bengal: 'State government pressurised hospital not to admit my wife', alleges RG Kar victim's father

The RG Kar victim's father on sunday alleged that a private hospital refused to admit his wife, who was injured in an alleged "police lathicharge" during a protest march the previous day, due to pressure from the state government. The RG Kar victim's mother had sustained injuries on her forehead, hand, and back. On saturday, she underwent a CT scan and other tests to ascertain the severity of internal and external injuries. Hospital authorities refused to comment on the matter.

On saturday evening, the doctor examined my wife and said she would be admitted for treatment. But as soon as the doctor left the hospital, the attitude of others there suddenly changed. They became evasive and then told me she could not be admitted due to pressure from the state government. He said that when he contacted the doctor, the doctor refused to elaborate on the admission.

The father said, however, they assured that the medicines given are sufficient for recovery. He also said that when the wife was brought to the hospital on saturday evening, the doctor had advised her to stay admitted for at least two days.

The victim's mother had on saturday alleged that she was assaulted by women police personnel during a march towards the state secretariat 'Nabanna'. The march was organised on the first anniversary of the rape and murder of her daughter at the state-run RG Kar Medical college and Hospital. The alleged attack took place at Park Street crossing, where the police lathi-charged protesters who broke barricades to stop them from moving towards the secretariat.

The victim's mother had made these allegations.

The victim's mother alleged that the police threw me to the ground. My 'shankha' (traditional conch shell bracelet) was broken, and I got injured on my forehead. She claimed that four to five policemen assaulted her during the clash. However, the police denied using any force on the victim's parents. The victim's father also alleged that the police tried to stop the family from joining the protest march even though the court had allowed a peaceful rally.
