When a
criminal incident such as firing,
murder or terrorist attack takes place, the investigation agencies first try to find the weapon with which the incident took place. Along with this, the agencies also try to find the cartridge shells at the scene. Actually, identification of the weapon helps in catching the
criminal, understanding the motive behind the incident and collecting evidence. But how do we know which weapon was used in the incident and how do we know from which gun the bullet recovered in the incident was fired. Let us understand its entire process.
Evidence found from the scene
Let us tell you that the identification of the gun from the bullet is done through scientific techniques of forensic ballistics. This process analyzes the specific marks between the bullet, cartridge shell and weapon. After the incident, the investigation agencies first collect bullets, cartridge shells and suspected weapons from the scene. These evidences are carefully sealed so that they are not tampered with. Initial forensic experts inspect the bullets and shells. This gives an
idea of the size of the bullet and the type of weapon (pistol, rifle, revolver).
How is the weapon identified?
The main investigation is done on the rifling marks. Every gun barrel has special stripes, which give a twist to the bullet. These stripes leave unique marks on the bullet. Experts compare these marks with the bullet fired from the suspected weapon under a microscope. If the marks match exactly, then it is confirmed that the bullet was fired from the same weapon. The cartridge shell is also examined. The firing pin, ejector and extractor marks are formed on the shell. These marks are different for every weapon. By looking at them under a microscope, they are compared with the test fired shell from the suspected weapon.
Finally a report is prepared
In test firing, the suspected weapon is fired in the lab. The bullet and shell obtained from this are compared with the evidence from the crime scene. If the marks match, then the weapon is identified. Experts prepare a report based on their investigation and from that report it becomes clear from which weapon the cartridge or bullet was fired.
