Puppets have the miraculous ability to open up a huge amount of empathy. That's what the world needs right now.
A new research by scholars at the Yale Child Study Center proves that puppets can draw interest and hold the attention of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) children by boosting the potential for uncovering more likable therapies that strengthen social engagement and promote learning.
The research, written in the journal Autism Research, is the first to examine anecdotal proof that children with ASD, like most children, pay notice to puppets. In a sequence of tests, the researchers checked the visual recognition patterns of young kids with ASD, adjacent a control club of typically developing children, in response to a video portraying a lively communication between Violet, a brightly glowing puppet, and a human counterpart.
They found that the attention models of kids with ASD were alike to those of children in the control group when Violet articulated, with both sets of children consuming a similar balance of time observing her face and displaying a strong inclination for the talking puppet over the hearing person.
Autistic children are less likely involve emotionally with their social companions, which limits their exposure to learning experiences. In the present research, it is found that while kids with autism paid less concentration than typically promoting peers when an interactive companion was human, their concentration was chiefly typical when the communicative partner was Violet, the puppet. These conclusions highlight the attentional and affective benefits of puppets which, expectedly, can be equipped to expand the therapeutic efforts with ASD children.
The conclusions lend scholarly importance to the anecdotal adventures and suggest that puppets could be a robust tool to help kids with ASD improve their social interactoin, which is very impressive.
Puppet theraphy could render a connection to therapeutic attempts aimed at developing understanding of human social signs for all children with ASD, despite of their level of impairment.
