Neena Gupta Recalls Bitter Experience With subhash ghai on ‘Khalnayak’ Set
Neena Gupta, known for her roles in ‘Panchayat’, ‘Badhaai Ho’, and ‘Vadh’, recently shared a behind-the-scenes experience from her early bollywood career.
Her latest film, ‘Vadh 2’, has received praise, bringing renewed attention to her versatile acting journey.
In a YouTube interview with Shubhankar Mishra, Neena recounted a bitter incident from the set of the 1993 film ‘Khalnayak’, where she had an extended cameo as the dancer Champa.
During the shooting of the song “Choli Ke Peeche”, directed by subhash ghai, she experienced a situation that initially left her angry and frustrated.
According to Neena, subhash ghai instructed the costume designer to alter her outfit to make her appear more attractive on screen.
The demand was made in front of her, which she initially found upsetting, feeling that it was unfair to single her out.
She recalled: “At the time, I was very angry and thought he was wrong to say that. But now I feel he was just doing his job. He had a specific image in mind for the character in the song, and Subhash ji clearly expressed the song's demands.”
Neena acknowledged that, with hindsight, she understood the director’s perspective and vision, even though the experience had been unpleasant at the time.
Her story highlights the challenges actors face, especially women, in balancing professional dignity with fulfilling a director’s creative requirements.
Neena’s cameo in ‘Khalnayak’ involved a popular item number alongside madhuri Dixit, which became iconic in 1990s Bollywood.
She reflected that these experiences shaped her understanding of the film industry’s professional expectations.
The interview demonstrates Neena Gupta’s honest and reflective nature, sharing past frustrations while recognizing the creative process in filmmaking.
Fans appreciated her candor, noting that her stories provide insight into bollywood history, challenges for actors, and the evolution of women’s roles in cinema.
Overall, the account from the ‘Choli Ke Peeche’ shoot underscores Neena Gupta’s resilience, professionalism, and ability to look back with perspective.
