Debate Begins After Rahman’s Interview
A recent interview by legendary composer A. R. Rahman with the BBC Asian Network sparked discussion in the film industry.
During the conversation, rahman mentioned that he has not been receiving as many work offers in bollywood as he once did.
He suggested that there might be some level of communal bias behind this situation, although he clarified that such things were not directly said to him.
His statement quickly became a talking point among filmmakers, musicians, and fans across the industry.
Salim Merchant Shares His Perspective
Music composer salim merchant recently reacted to Rahman’s remarks during a conversation with IANS.
Merchant began by expressing deep respect for rahman and acknowledged his immense contribution to indian music.
However, he said that from his personal experience, he does not believe communal discrimination plays a significant role in the film industry.
Merchant also clarified that his opinion comes from his own perspective and that rahman may have had different experiences.
Ramayana Project Mentioned as an Example
Merchant pointed to Rahman’s involvement in the upcoming film Ramayana as a major example.
According to him, rahman composing music for such a massive project indicates that the industry respects his talent.
“If rahman is getting the opportunity to compose music for Ramayana, which is one of the biggest films being made in india, it is difficult to believe that he is facing communal discrimination,” Merchant said.
He also noted that the film is based on Hindu mythology, which further shows that creative talent is valued beyond religious identity.
Rahman Clarifies His Intentions
After his comments triggered debate, rahman later released a video message to clarify his stance.
He stated that he never intended to hurt anyone’s sentiments or create division.
Rahman emphasized that music has always been a medium to unite cultures and celebrate diversity.
He added that india remains his inspiration, teacher, and home, and his goal has always been to respect and uplift cultures through music.
