A case has been filed in the chennai high court seeking a permanent place to set up a cemetery for the Arundhatiyar community as their bodies will be buried in a stream outcrop in Madur village in Kallakurichi district.
When the case came up for hearing before Judge R. Mahadevan, the government was told that steps were being taken to set up a cemetery for arundhati and select suitable land.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the judge ordered that a commonplace for all, irrespective of caste, be found in the village of Madur for a cemetery.
The judge also directed the tamil Nadu government to dispose of caste nameplates in cemeteries in tamil Nadu and to set up common cemeteries in every village without any caste discrimination.
He also clarified in the judgment that all citizens have the right to use these public cemeteries without any discrimination.
The judge advised the state to impose fines and penalties on those who violate the rules. In his order, the judge stressed that local bodies holding public cemeteries should be encouraged through incentives.
The judge also closed the case, ordering the government to include caste, religious tolerance, mutual respect, culture and tradition in the textbooks.
