On Tuesday, the CWRC meeting in the national capital directed karnataka to release 3,000 cubic feet of water from Cauvery river to tamil Nadu from september 28 to october 15. Speaking to reporters, Siddaramaiah said he had spoken to the lawyers who had recommended him to challenge them.
"The Cauvery Water Regulatory Commission (CWRC) has ordered release of 3000 cubic feet of water, I have already spoken to our lawyers. They have suggested us to challenge this order in the supreme Court. We will challenge it in the supreme Court. We are not. Water should be released to tamil Nadu, we are challenging the CWRC order." said the Chief Minister. Siddaramaiah also said that 194 taluks have been declared drought-affected and prayed for more rain at the Mahadeswara temple. Siddaramaiah and Sivakumar should not act like agents of tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, the opposition parties in karnataka, which have announced a pre-poll alliance for the 2024 lok sabha polls, the bharatiya janata party and the Janata Dal (Secular) - have staged a protest against the state's Congress-led Siddaramaiah government. Do not release water to tamil Nadu. Former chief minister and bjp leader BS Yeddyurappa said, “Our chief minister Siddaramaiah and Shivkumar should know that they should not behave like agents of tamil Nadu. They should realize the facts. Even the water in almost all our reservoirs is insufficient. For drinking purposes.” JD(S) leader and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy said, “After the decision, he was very happy. But there is shortage of water in the river," he alleged.
Bengaluru South bjp mp Tejashwi surya also said that karnataka should stop the water being released to tamil Nadu. In the 200-year-old dispute between karnataka and tamil Nadu over Cauvery water, the supreme court in 2018 ordered an additional share of 14.75 TMC of water, reducing tamil Nadu's share of the river. Bengaluru meets the city's drinking water needs and is the main source of irrigation for agricultural lands in the state's Mandya region.
However, as political parties in both states - seeking prime minister Narendra Modi's intervention - argue that the 2018 supreme court order refers to the water sharing norm only for a normal monsoon year, this year's rainfall is low. More than 30 percent above normal. The four months of monsoon that started in june in august and september were the lowest for karnataka in the last 123 years.
