New Delhi: In a significant move aimed at strengthening the accuracy of India’s Aadhaar database, the Unique Identification Authority of india (UIDAI) has completed mandatory **biometric updates for more than 1 crore schoolchildren across the country. This large‑scale update drive covered approximately 83,000 schools, marking a major milestone in Aadhaar’s ongoing data accuracy efforts.
The initiative falls under the Mandatory biometric Update (MBU) programme, which requires children enrolled for Aadhaar before the age of five to provide full biometric details—including fingerprints, iris scans, and photographs—once they reach the ages of five and 15. At the time of initial enrolment for very young children, biometric data isn’t captured because these physical characteristics are not yet fully developed. The update process ensures that Aadhaar data remains accurate, functional, and reliable for use in identity authentication and access to services.
Officials from uidai said the completion of over 1 crore MBUs nationwide demonstrates the scale and reach of the Aadhaar system, and underscores the authority’s commitment to maintaining updated and usable biometric records. Without these updates, Aadhaar authentication can fail, which may make it difficult for students to access education services, government benefits, and entrance examinations such as NEET, JEE, and CUET.
Under current uidai guidelines, parents and guardians are urged to ensure that biometric updates are completed within the prescribed age windows. Failing to update biometrics — particularly for children who have crossed 7 years of age without completing an MBU — may lead to issues in authentication and, in some cases, Aadhaar deactivation.
The update drive reflects broader changes in Aadhaar policy over the past year, aimed at improving ease of updates and expanding online services for demographic changes such as name, address, date of birth, and mobile number—some of which can now be done through the myAadhaar portal without visiting an enrolment centre.
The uidai continues to stress the importance of keeping Aadhaar information current to ensure seamless access to wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>digital services and government programmes that rely on Aadhaar‑based authentication.
