Max is seen sitting alone at Billy's grave reading a letter she sent to him about how different the world has been since he died near the opening of Stranger Things season 4's official trailer. Shortly later, Max appears alongside Steve, Dustin, and Lucas at Billy's grave, where the latter character hugs her before she inexplicably levitates into the air (or, more likely, in the series after). When Max takes to the air, the Stranger Things boys become understandably agitated, despite the fact that it is unclear what generated this ability.

There are a few theories as to why Max can now fly in the air, with a new power acquisition still being a possibility. Max is frequently shown at Billy's grave, racing through the new Upside Down settings, and discovering a grandfather clock identical to Creel House's on her own in the official teaser for Stranger Things season 4. Since the grandfather clock at Creel house is thought to be a portal to the Upside Down, it's possible that Max exploring it on her own triggered a reaction that gave her powers, which she could have augmented when visiting Billy's grave, who was infamously possessed by the Upside Down's Mind Flayer in Stranger Things season 3.

While Max's levitation in the Stranger Things season 4 teaser appears to be more tied to the paranormal theme of the new episode, her talents may indicate she's the new Eleven. Max may only be seen levitating outside of Billy Hargrove's tomb, implying that he is possessing her from beyond the grave. Stranger Things season 4's Creel house teased a more haunting, frightening tone to the show, which may include possessions and paranormal manipulations a la The Exorcist or Poltergeist. Billy's spirit may have been kept by some mystical ability of the Mind Flayer, which could be influencing Max while she's at his burial in Stranger Things season 4.
