Tu Marz Hai, Dawa Bhi - these five words from Gehraiyaan's title tune encapsulate every individual in Shakun Batra's complicated story, which he co-wrote with Ayesha DeVitre and
sumit Roy.
deepika padukone plays Alisha, a
yoga teacher, and Dhairya Karwa plays Karan, a screenwriter, in Gehraiyaan, a film about a couple who live together. On the other hand,
ananya Panday plays Tia, a privileged woman, and
siddhant chaturvedi plays Zain, a real estate agent. The couple is engaged, and a lavish Tuscan
marriage is in the works.
Shakun Batra begins stripping the layers of Alisha, Tia, and Zain's characters as the four meet in a lovely backdrop of the Arabian sea, luxurious mumbai flats, and a beach-front property as the four meet. As seen in the teaser, Alisha and Tia are cousins who have grown up alongside but as life gets in the way, they drift apart and their stark reality now stand in between them. Batra produces multiple unpleasant situations, which can be felt in every shot. This unease is shared by deepika as Alisha and ananya as Tia on several occasions.
Batra's narrative magic is in the frames he and his writers, as well as cinematographer Kaushal Shah, create. In Gehraiyaan, he's done a lot of that, drawing inspiration from the ocean, reflections, and the colour blue. On the surface, Tia and Zain's lives appear to be perfect looking, but Batra unveils each character's flaws as the story unfolds.
Deepika Padukone is the true skipper of this expedition, delivering a heartbreaking performance. deepika goes deep and pulls out the best in everything she does, whether it's sharing screen time with naseeruddin shah or dealing with panic attacks. She also provides opportunities for the younger actors to flourish. The empathic therapy of melancholy, suicide, PTSD, anxiety, and panic attacks is another distinguishing feature of Gehraiyaan. The film's plot and directors are conscious of not going overboard but showing enough to arouse emotions, using a board game of Snakes and Ladders as a reference for feeling stuck to portraying triggers. The film's dialogues, when combined with the intelligent background music, provide even more weight to the storyline.
