A visitor recently expressed surprise when he said that no one was topless on an indian beach. At first, he didn't know what to do, but he found that it was fine after taking off his shirt. Nonetheless, most people preferred to remain covered.
While some social media users criticized the traveler, many others explained that it is indian custom to wear clothing to the beach. They pointed out that a lot of indians are afraid to show too much skin.
"So I just arrived at the first beach on my trip in india, but I've noticed nobody is topless; everybody is fully clothed," the traveler posted on Instagram. It's beyond my comprehension. I'm not kidding at all. There are a few hundred people around, and I don't understand why two of the guys aren't wearing shirts. As far as I'm concerned, having a top-off is socially acceptable.
This cultural difference in india was described by social media users after the video, which was uploaded to instagram in early May, went viral. One person commented on the photo, saying, "We dress modestly here; showing too much skin is culturally sensitive, so we're always mindful of it."
Recalling their experience, another traveler said, "Dude, I'd do the same as you. Many people warned me about leaving phones unattended and other things before I traveled to India. I did drop my phone by accident, but guess what? In a village, a local boy located it and gave me back my phone. I was essentially the safest in india, but my hand luggage was stolen when I arrived at Heathrow, UK. Thus, the story of how perception is not always reality is told there. The issue was in the UK, but the indians were amazing in India.
