"I believe that this is a much more significant problem than anything else, even if we ignore the military danger posed by China. Our tribes and our means of subsistence will face an existential threat.

The chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, expressed concern about the world's largest dam project being developed by china, India's neighbor, on the Yarlung Tsangpo river, which is the Tibetan name for the Brahmaputra. He said, "It is quite serious because china could even use this as a sort of 'water bomb'."

Since china is not a member of the international water treaty that may have compelled it to follow international standards, cm Khandu called it a "matter of grave concern" in an interview with PTI.  Let's examine Beijing's plans in more detail and see why india is so concerned about it.

Three Gorges Dam
After Chinese Premier Li Keqiang visited the border region in 2021, the Yarlung Tsangpo dam project was revealed. It is part of China's plan to construct the largest hydropower dam in the world on a river that runs into bangladesh and India.

The project's possible effects on millions of people downstream have raised concerns in both countries.  According to reports, china approved a USD 137 billion, five-year project in 2024 that would become the largest hydropower dam in the world and produce 60,000 MW of electricity.

According to media sources, indian environmentalists have expressed worries about the project in a hilly, ecologically sensitive area, highlighting the potential impact that river exploitation may have on the water flow in the northeastern provinces of the country.  Beijing claimed that the decision to construct the dam was reached following a thorough scientific review, despite India's pleas for china to safeguard the interests of millions of people downstream.
