After failing a breathalyzer test without drinking, three bus drivers from the kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) were on the verge of being arrested for drunk driving.

The Reason?  Jackfruit.

According to india Today, the strange incident happened at the Pandalam depot in the pathanamthitta district last week. Before drivers leave for their routes in the morning, they undergo a standard inspection that includes the breathalyzer test. The device displayed a blood alcohol reading of 10, which is higher than the legally allowed limit, when the drivers took the test. This occurred even though the drivers had not had any alcohol at all.

Astonished by the reading, the drivers claimed not to have drunk any alcohol.  One of the drivers from Kottarakara in the kollam area brought a jackfruit to the attention of the other vehicles amid the turmoil, according to india Today. The KSRTC personnel then carried out an experiment to confirm the reading's origin.  After testing negative in the previous reading, a driver was invited to eat a few pieces of the identical jackfruit that the other drivers had eaten previously.

According to the india Today article, the driver's alcohol test resulted in a positive level when the alarm went off.  Nothing else had been ingested by the driver. The breathalyzer reading might have been impacted by the fruit's intense fermentation when it was overripe.  The jackfruit's fermented sugar caused the equipment to detect the presence of alcohol in the blood.
