Trump, who is currently in Scotland, warned both Cambodian prime minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting prime minister Phumtham Wechayachai that further conflict would endanger possible US trade agreements in a post on Truth Social.
Trump posted on Truth Social that "both parties are looking for an immediate ceasefire and peace," outlining his attempts to settle the dispute. Both countries, he continued, were keen to get back to the "trading table."
"They have agreed to immediately meet and quickly work out a ceasefire and, ultimately, PEACE!" said he. Details of the forthcoming discussions have not been verified by the white house or the participating embassies, though.
Phumtham highlighted the need for "sincere intention" from cambodia while reaffirming Thailand's readiness to seek a ceasefire "in principle". He requested that trump express Thailand's readiness to engage in bilateral talks aimed at achieving lasting peace in a facebook post. On saturday, fighting escalated in Thailand's Trat Province and Cambodia's Pursat Province, creating a new front more than 100 kilometers away from the original battleground.
After a Cambodian soldier was killed in late May, retaliatory deployments along the disputed 817-kilometer border sparked the clashes. Ancient temple ownership has long been a source of contention, particularly with regard to the UNESCO-listed Preah Vihear, which was given to cambodia in a 1962 international court of Justice (ICJ) judgment that thailand has never quite embraced.
As of saturday, cambodia reported 13 deaths (five troops, eight civilians), while thailand claimed 20 deaths (seven soldiers, 13 civilians). The defense ministry of cambodia called on the international community to denounce Thailand's actions, accusing it of unlawful aggression and military buildup.
Thailand, however, reaffirmed its desire for a bilateral solution and charged cambodia with using landmines and carrying out cross-border assaults.
The indian embassy in cambodia issued a travel alert on saturday, warning indian citizens to stay away from border areas due to the rising violence and tensions with Thailand. Thai officials urged the UN Security Council to take notice of Cambodia's "aggression" on Friday. Thailand has denied the ICJ's jurisdiction, but cambodia has since requested the court's intervention once more.
