The Government of tamil Nadu has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UN Women — the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.
🤝 Purpose of the MoU
The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation between UN women and the state government to advance gender equality, women’s safety, and empowerment in tamil Nadu. Under this partnership:
- A tripartite coalition has been formed involving:
- The Department of Social Welfare and women Empowerment (Tamil Nadu government),
- The Department of Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles & Khadi (Tamil Nadu government),
- And UN Women.
- This coalition is known as the Textile industry Coalition (TiC). Its focus is to improve safety at workplaces, especially in sectors where a large number of women are employed, such as the textile industry.
🎯 Key Areas of Focus
The MoU and related coalition initiatives include:
🏭 Safe and Inclusive Workplaces
- Creating policies and standard procedures to ensure zero tolerance for violence and sexual harassment against women workers.
- Promoting safer work environments through training, awareness, and implementation of best practices.
👩 Multi‑Stakeholder Engagement
- Bringing together government bodies, industry brands, manufacturers, trade unions, research institutions, and civil society groups to work together toward gender equality and women’s rights.
📍 Geographical Reach
- This initiative is planned to be implemented in key districts with significant textile industry presence, including Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Karur, and Dindigul.
