In today's medical world, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being called the "doctor of the future". From reading X-rays to cancer detection, AI has made miraculous changes in healthcare. But have you ever thought that this technology can also weaken the skills of doctors? A study recently published in the Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology journal has proved this fear to be true.
Important study done in Poland
This research was done in four colonoscopy centers in Poland. In late 2021, the use of AI tools was started here, so that abnormal cells could be easily identified. But the results were surprising. Earlier, the adenoma detection rate without the help of AI, that is, the detection of cells before becoming cancer, was 28 percent. However, after continuous dependence on AI, it has come down to 22 percent.
Why is there a threat to the skills of doctors?
The researchers said that, continuous excessive trust on AI can make one a habit. This has revealed three major dangers.
Doctors remain less focused.
The sense of responsibility starts decreasing
The ability to think and take decisions on their own becomes weak
This is the reason why experts are considering it a big challenge for the healthcare system
Why did the result come out opposite to other studies?
Earlier in many randomized trials, it was revealed that adenoma detection increases with the help of AI. But the author of the new study, Dr. Yuichi Mori, says that doctors who are constantly in contact with AI start performing even weaker while doing colonoscopy without AI. That is, it can create a situation of lack of skill.
Should AI be adopted or limited?
CARPL.AI founder Dr Vidur Mahajan believes that stopping technology is not the solution. Giving an example, he said, “Imagine, how reliable a driver would look today without google Maps? He argues that the right use of AI can take doctors to the "best" level. The real challenge is how to strike a balance between doctors and technology.
AI has taken the medical world to new heights, but this study from poland shows that excessive trust can be dangerous. Continuously strengthening the training and skills of doctors is as important as adopting AI in healthcare. Otherwise, it may happen that humans lose their skills by trusting machines.
