At the box office, ponniyin selvan 2 is having a peculiar tale to tell. The movie does not fully capitalize on the sequel advantage, which typically works really well, like in the cases of kgf 2 and Baahubali 2. By this tuesday, PS2 had earned $3,946,095 in US box offices. Comparatively, PS1's inaugural episode brought in $4,470,022 by its first Tuesday. 

When the tuesday totals are taken into account, PS2 has made about $500K less than the first section. This is an odd pattern for sequels, which often ignite the box office much more quickly than their predecessors. During its entire run, PS1 brought in $6.7 million at the US box office. The movie has had a successful run in the USA. But despite positive word-of-mouth and respectable reviews, PS2 isn't doing well at the box office.

The movie needs to perform well in the USA in order to surpass PS1's box office total. With its underwhelming run at the US box office, PS2 has an odd story to tell that runs counter to the norm for sequels. For the first time, a sequel has done below par than its predecessor and that too with a huge stellar cast.
