In the German election, the Social Democrats narrowly defeated Merkel's group. The second alternative was to resurrect Merkel's outgoing "grand coalition" of the Union and the Social Democrats, which ruled germany for 12 of Merkel's 16 years in power. But after years of political wrangling, there was little desire for it.
The only other option with a parliamentary majority is a repeat of the Union and Social Democrats' "grand coalition." According to Lindner, almost 75% of Germans did not choose for the future chancellor's party in a post-election debate on public broadcaster ZDF with all parties' leaders. That is the grouping that has ruled germany for the past 12 years of Merkel's 16-year tenure, and it has been marred by squabbling, but this time it would be led by Scholz, with Merkel's bloc as a junior partner. However, there is little appetite for that.
