Increase in elephants in Karnataka: minister Ishwara..!?
According to the latest report, there were around 6049 elephants in the state in 2017. During the census this time, it was estimated that there were 6,395 elephants, which is an increase of about 350 percent, said Forest minister Ishwara Khandre. An increase of about 350 per cent in the number of elephants in the state was analyzed from 5914 to 6877. Today (Wednesday) a report on elephant census was released in Bengaluru and the report said that the number of elephants has increased significantly.
Forest minister Ishwara Khandre released the current line of elephant census at Vikassaudha. According to the latest report, there were around 6049 elephants in the state in 2017. During the census this time, it was estimated that there were 6,395 elephants, an increase of about 350 percent. An elephant census is conducted every five years to find out whether the number of elephants in the country has increased or decreased on Elephant Day. The previous elephant census was held in 2017.
An elephant census has been conducted simultaneously from May-17 to May-19, 2023 with the leadership of these three states karnataka, kerala and tamil Nadu. It is special that on the same date a similar census was conducted in andhra pradesh as well. The nature of this census, training of field staff, analysis of census results and report preparation by Prof. R. The karnataka Forest Department conducted the elephant census with technical assistance from the indian Institute of Science (IISC) headed by Sukumar.
More than 3400 personnel from 32 divisions of the state participated in this elephant census and the elephant census was done in three ways. Data were collected through direct survey, transect survey or ladle ladder method and water hole survey. In this method the movement of elephants, age classes, male to female ratio etc. are recorded.
Elephant census was conducted in 32 divisions of the state and elephants were found in 23 divisions in this survey. The total number of elephants enumerated directly on the day of survey was 2219. The survey was conducted in 6104 sq km area out of 18975 sq km area in these 23 divisions. The Forest Department clarified that this survey and report is more accurate and reliable as this is the first time such a large area has been surveyed.
