A Singapore-flagged container vessel caught fire approximately 144 km off the coast of Beypore in kerala, prompting the indian military and the indian Coast Guard (ICG) to release a rescue and remedy operation to bring the blaze under control and rescue the group on board, a defense ministry spokesperson in kochi said on Monday.

In keeping with the defense ministry's post on social media platform 'X,' the hearth was reported on box vessel 'MV Wan Hai 503,' around seventy-eight nautical miles off Beypore in the kozhikode district of Kerala.

A Reuters file stated that more than one explosion caused the fire, and almost forty boxes fell into the Arabian Sea. Several crew members jumped off the vessel to get away from the flames.

"In keeping with initial statistics, there have been 22 people on board the ship...18 jumped into the sea and are in rescue boats. Efforts are underway to rescue them," Shekhar Kuriakose, secretary of the kerala catastrophe management authority, said, adding that the vessel was not "presently sinking."

Of the 22 team individuals onboard, 18 have abandoned the vessel on the boat at the same time as the relaxation is pronounced to be lacking.

The military diverted its INS surat and planned a DO sortie from INS Garuda while the ICG deployed multiple assets, inclusive of a CG Dornier, for rescue and assessment, the ministry said inside the announcement.

"The vessel is currently on earth and adrift," the ministry brought.
