Till saturday evening, more than 18,000 applications for engineering seats in tamil Nadu had been received. The Directorate of Technical education (DOTE), which conducts engineering counseling each year, reported that 18,181 applications had been submitted as of saturday at 6 p.m. 3,005 candidates have paid their registration costs out of the total applications. According to sources, 745 applicants have uploaded their certificates altogether. On May 5, the online application process for engineering admissions opened.

Teachers cite "disturbed academic cycles", "low-quality infrastructure and labs", and out-of-date curricula in many universities. students consider the fact that many universities are situated in tier-three cities and semi-urban towns to be a significant disadvantage. Together, these elements have affected placements at one end and admissions at the other. The Times of india reports that in 2022–2023, AKTU institutions only had 30,000 registered candidates for the approximately 70,000 seats that remained after numerous underfunded engineering colleges closed, eliminating thousands of seats.

For a while, AKTU had trouble getting seats filled. According to the Times of india, it had 1.34 lakh BTech seats in 2021–2022 but was only able to fill 20% of them (19,057) through university counselling and about 66% (70,559) through direct admissions, primarily to private colleges. This left 44,384 seats unfilled. Up until 2021, the state-level Uttar Pradesh Combined Entrance Test (UPCET) was the only way to gain admission to technical education programmes in UP colleges. The university now takes part in the JEE Main, a national entrance exam, for engineering. Counselling, which involves choosing a candidate for a seat, is still done by state officials.
