What Happened?
The Indian Railways has initiated a major action to clean up the ticket booking ecosystem of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) by identifying and blocking tens of millions of fake or suspicious user accounts that were being used for fraud, automated bookings, and ticket hoarding. This move is part of a broader effort to make online reservations fairer and more transparent.
Massive Cleanup of Fake Accounts
- Railways removed more than 3 crore (30 million+) fake or unauthorized irctc accounts from its booking portal.
- This cleanup targeted accounts created by bots, fraudsters and unauthorized agents often used to book large numbers of tickets unfairly.
The extensive action dramatically reduced the number of new daily registrations from about 1 lakh to roughly 5,000, suggesting the effectiveness of identity checks and fraud control measures.
Why Were Fake Accounts a Problem?
1. Tatkal and Advance Booking Abuse
Fake and bot‑generated accounts were widely used to rapidly book Tatkal and early advance reservations, which filled up seats within seconds of opening — often before genuine passengers could secure tickets.
2. Touts and Unfair Practices
Some accounts were part of ticket touting schemes, where unscrupulous agents used multiple IDs or automated scripts to corner tickets and resell them at higher prices. Blocking these accounts helps curb these unethical practices.
What Measures Are Being Used?
Aadhaar Verification
IRCTC has strengthened Aadhaar authentication requirements for bookings, especially for high‑demand categories like Tatkal and Advance Reservation Period bookings. Only verified users are allowed to use these options on the first day, which helps reduce misuse.
Anti‑Bot and Cyber Security Tools
The Railways has also introduced cyber security systems and anti‑bot technology to detect and shut down automated booking attempts before they complete transactions, ensuring fairer access to tickets.
Impact on Genuine Passengers
✔ Improved ticket availability: Fewer fake accounts mean more real passengers can book tickets, especially in high‑demand periods.
✔ Fairer Tatkal allocation: Aadhaar‑linked rule has reduced unfair advantage from bot accounts.
✔ Better system transparency: Reduces unsavoury practices and restores trust in the official booking platform.
What This Means Going Forward
This crackdown is part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to secure its online reservation ecosystem, prevent fraud, and ensure ordinary travellers have a fair chance at booking train tickets. By blocking fake accounts and tightening verification processes, authorities are trying to make Tatkal and advance bookings less chaotic and more accessible.
Important Note for Passengers
- Passengers should use their real, Aadhaar‑verified identity when creating or using an irctc account.
- Any suspicious registrations may be blocked without notice as part of anti‑fraud efforts.
- Ensure your contact details and Aadhaar linkage are up to date for smoother booking experiences.
