The victim, a medical student from Jaleswar, Odisha, was gang-raped in Durgapur, West Bardhaman district, West Bengal. She had gone out for dinner with a male friend when one of the accused dragged her to a secluded area near the campus gate and sexually assaulted her.

The victim’s father has requested her transfer from West bengal to Odisha, citing concerns for her safety following the traumatic incident.
