Given how close Ed Sheeran's moving new song, Visiting Hours was to a song he penned months earlier, one Australian songwriter couldn't believe his ears when he heard it.

In March, Sheeran composed the song while in quarantine at a hotel in australia before singing it at Michael Gudinski's funeral ceremony.

The song will appear on his upcoming album, which is set to be published in October.

In a strange coincidence, the song is hauntingly identical in sections to a single written late last year by Australian Nick Gill (who writes songs under the moniker "The january Choir").

There is no evidence that Sheeran has ever heard Gill's song or has been influenced in any way by it.

Stormy Weather, Gill's single, includes vocalist Abbi Yeo and was produced by Matt McLaren, a previous runner-up on Australia's Got Talent.

Gill never shared the entire song online, but he did post a few bits from the recording process in january on his instagram account.

“Realistically, Ed Sheeran would not have heard this song,” Gill explained, “but I suppose there are only so many ideas in the world.” “It's simply one of those coincidences, even though the tunes are practically note-for-note for a decent portion.

“It might be irritating that Ed had the same concept as me and that his thought would be heard by millions of people. Instead, I want to focus on the fact that, for a little minute, I shared the same thought as someone I regard to be our time's top songwriting artist.”
