The original animated feature and television series of Lilo & Stitch are both cherished pieces in Disney's filmography.  Since viewers have developed a close bond with these characters over the years, there was a lot of expectation on the live-action adaptation to perform well. After just one weekend in cinemas, Lilo & Stitch's Rotten Tomatoes score is probably fixed in stone and presents a positive story for Disney.

And The Popcornmeter Is Even Higher


With 161 reviews to date, Lilo & Stitch presently has a 68% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes.  Since its debut at 74% on Rotten Tomatoes, the score has somewhat decreased.  This is less than the original, which had 152 reviews and an amazing Certified Fresh 86% rating.  In terms of crucial numbers, both films have hit a critical mass, therefore it is doubtful that their positions will change significantly.  Even if the live-action version of the movie is 18 percentage points worse than the original, most reviews are still favorable. The 68% approval rate is a victory considering how well-liked the original was. 

The fact that viewers are enjoying Lilo & Stitch even more than reviewers speaks volumes about the film's performance.  At the time of writing, the film had over 5,000 ratings and a 93% Popcornmeter rating.  In fact, this is higher than the animated movie from 2002, which has accumulated almost 250,000 Popcornmeter scores and a 78% rating over time.  Although that score sometimes fluctuate, it appears to have stabilized in the 1990s, and its favorable reviews are a clear indication of its merits.
