In 2022's Scream, Ghostface returns for the sixth time, with a new set of scary movie rules to uphold. This time, the killings are focused on a new gang of Woodsboro adolescents, the majority of whom have ties to characters from past Scream movies. The new laws are based on this part of the film, which Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown), the group's new horror specialist, refers to as a "requel."

For each of the first three Scream movies, Mindy is the nephew of Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy), the horror specialist who reveals the laws by which horror movie murderers work. The series is known for its meta send-up of scary movie conventions, with each film presenting a new set of rules dependent on the type of horror film it is. The rules of horror flicks, horror successors, the final part of a horror trilogy, and horror movie remakes are all covered in the original script to Scream 4.

The Kills Must Be Connected To The Original
Scream's initial Ghostface assault begins the franchise's ties by mimicking Drew Barrymore's Casey Becker's original story phone conversation sequence, in which he is taunted and murdered. Even in the new movie's opening sequence, it's clear that Ghostface planned his first assault as a compliment to the classic.

Legacy Characters Have To Appear
Another requel requirement that Mindy notes is that legacy personalities, or protagonists who were in the previous film, must appear to shepherd in the new characters.
