Bharat Ratna is the country's highest civilian honor but it has also been the subject of controversies at times. Some people believe that Bharat Ratna is politically motivated. This award is often given to supporters of the government or around the time of elections.

In 1990, when VP Singh's government announced the award of Bharat Ratna to Constitution maker Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, the question was raised as to why this honor was not given while he was alive. At that time, the VP Singh government was accused that the Dalit voters were angry at not giving this honor to Bhimrao Ambedkar during his lifetime, hence the award was given to woo the voters.

In 1992, PV narasimha Rao's government had announced to honor freedom fighter Subhash chandra bose with Bharat Ratna 'posthumously', but there was such a controversy over it that till date he could not be given Bharat Ratna. After the government's decision, a petition was filed in which it was said that when the government of india has not yet accepted that Bose had died in a plane crash, then how can the Bharat Ratna be given 'posthumously'. After this, subhash chandra Bose's family refused to accept the Bharat Ratna award.

Let us also tell you that Bharat Ratna is given by the President every year on 26 January. Initially this honor was given only while alive, then later in 1955, the provision of giving Bharat Ratna posthumously also was added. Till now only sachin tendulkar has received Bharat Ratna from the sports world. Sachin is also the youngest person to receive Bharat Ratna.
